A mission from God

I'm on a mission this year. A mission to try new sock yarns. OK, at least BUY new sock yarns. I've been scouring The Loopy Ewe, snatching things up right and left. I'm trying not to buy things I've already bought, and/or used. (Except for Trekking. There has to be an exception to every rule, right?) I've been popping over to some of the smaller online sock dealers, checking out their wares, when lo and behold, I get my email update from Simply Sock Yarn, and they have the Dream in Color that the Ewe is always out of. Hmmmmmm, oooh, that's pretty, and that's pretty, and before you know it, I'm at free shipping (my favorite!).

Left to Right: Soft Touch Ultra Heathers (which I've been wanting to try for months), Dream in Color Smooshy (I can't remember the color name, but she's out of it), ShibuKnits in Peacock (this yarn is GORGEOUS), and Sleeping Dragon in Lipstick Lava (also GORGEOUS).

I was good, and tried to get mostly solids. I have a ton of varigated sock yarn, and while I love it, some of the more detailed patterns look better in solids or nearly solids. But my stash is woefully low on those. I found the remedy!

This is all lovely, and the only thing keeping me from casting on is, well, I'm not sure. I do have a few pairs of empty needles, but I'm trying to finish things up, not start new.

My credit card is all better, for now. But it may have taken a swipe today for something, but you'll have to wait about two weeks before I can show you that greatness. What's new in your stash? What's your favorite sock yarn? I need more ideas!

  1. Pretties! I think trying new sock yarn is a good idea. As a twist I just got new yarn yesterday in a color I wouldn't usually buy.

  2. Wow, those are fabulous. Now we all know where to come for reports on all the different brands of sock yarn out there!! It seems to me solids and semi-solids are getting more and more popular, maybe sock designs are getting more and more detailed and like you said, the solids show the patterns off much better. Although I'm sure pretty hand-paints will never go out of style!!

  4. That's some really nice stuff! I haven't knitted any socks in awhile, but I'm trying to finish up other projects first, before diving into socks (wheeeeee!)

I have a question I was hoping you could answer. I think I remember you knitted the Hourglass Sweater from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I have some yarn I'd like to use for the project, but I don't quite have (enough 70 yards short). I need to knit a size large, and I was wondering if you had a lot of leftover yarn afterwards. Some patterns almost always call for an extra skein (just to make you spend more money, I think), but I'd hate to knit the sweater and find out I'm too short.

    Any help? Thanks so much!

  7. "I do have a few pairs of empty needles..."

Oh my god, girl, you are *killing* me! That's one of the funniest unintentionally funny things I've heard lately! Bless you. You scored some awesome babies, though.

  8. You've chosen all of my favorite colors. I've been knitting socks quite a bit too. I need to choose solids more often though. I'm more likely to wear the solid color socks, BUT I just love the self-striping skeins of yarn.

  9. *drool* You've knit so many more socks than me, I'm sure you've tried nearly everything. I really like Cherry Tree Hill, though. Nice and spoingy and vibrant colors. I'm working with some Claudia's now, and I looove the colorway. I'm finding it a bit more splitty than the CTH, but that could be the pattern I'm doing, too (lots of KTBL).

  10. No matter what else I am knitting I have to have socks on the needles, so I understand your quest for sock yarn! I love the Smooshy, and wish it wasn't so hard to find. You did a great job in the color choices. Enjoy!

  11. Love the new colors -- pink and green are my favorite!

I saw swatches of Colinette Jitterbug at the new LYS that look really pretty. The Yarn4Socks site also has some great choices but I don't remember what you've tried...I want to try Seacoast and Fleece Artist. Also, Kirsty at Piece of Beauty has *gorgeous* rich colors of sock yarn. Katie at Live2Knit has softer colors that are also pretty, depending on your mood. :) Hope that helps!
