February FWMQG BOM: HST block with tutorial

Welcome! This tutorial is part of the FWMQG BOM program - this is our February block, focusing on making a star block with half-square triangles.

You can make HSTs in any way you want. You will need 1/4 yard of the colors you choose (if you make the interior star in different colors you will need less.) this makes a 16" finished block. You could get a larger or smaller clock by changing yet size of your squares and HSTs.

Cut: 16 2.5" squares of your background fabric
16 3" squares of your background fabric.
12 3" squares of color A (dark pink in my example)
12 3" squares of color B (dark yellow in my example)
4 3" squares of color C (light pink)
4 3" squares of color D (light yellow)

Make the following HST combinations:
Use 2 squares of color D/background (Makes 4 total squares)
Use 2 squares of color C/background (Makes 4 total squares)
Use 2 squares of color D/color C (Makes 4 total squares)
Use 6 squares of color B/background (Makes 12 total squares)
Use 6 squares of color A/background (Makes 12 total squares)
Use 6 squares of color A/color B (Makes 12 total squares)

Press and trim your HSTs to 2.5" and lay them out in these rows:

Row 1

Row 2

Row 3

Row 4

Row 5

Row 6

Row 7

Row 8

Press your rows and sew together. You may find it helps reduce the bulk to press your seams open, both on the back of the HSTs and in the rows and columns.

You're done! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Blocks of the Month - FWMQG

My guild, the Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild is doing a block of the month challenge.  The board members (myself included) are each choosing a block for the month and presenting it to the members. So far we have made these blocks:

BOM 8 pointed star

BOM

Both from the Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop Book

February BOM - Wonky Pinwheel

Wonky Pinwheel Block

Block of the Month

Scrappy Block

Star Block

Another Star

Along with these blocks there have been some that didn't make the cut! These are my 'not quite' blocks - the ones I thought we might do that just didn't come out good enough.

Triangle Block

Triangle Wheel - can't get the block to lie flat

Octogonal Orb Block

Octogonal Orb Block - this one failed because we tried to size it down to 12.5"

Mod Mosaic Block

Mod Mosaic Block - too messy looking - needs to be planned out more

Whew! I'm planning on using my 'failures' on the back of the quilt - I'm sure I'll have a few more!

Lucky Stars BOM

This winter I saw that Elizabeth at Don't Call me Betsy was doing a paper pieced block of the month club. And it was stars - I love stars in quilts and had been wanting to do more paper piecing. I signed up and then dithered over fabric choices for two months! I was trying to decide if I wanted all of the stars to have the same color theme, or to be unique. I did finally decide that I wanted to use text prints for the background of the stars, and then decided to follow her suggested colors for the stars. I did make my own choices for the March block and I really like the way that one turned out.

Now I have to figure out how to store these and the BOM my guild is doing. I don't have a design wall (or space for one) so I need a storage solution that won't result in mangled blocks by year's end. Any suggestions?
