Blogger's Quilt Festival: Original Design

I am so excited that it is Blogger's Quilt Festival time again! I look forward to this every year and love looking at all the wonderful entries! I am very excited this fall that there are new categories for modern quilts and original design.

This is my entry for original design. I made this for my quild's "put a goose on it" challenge and I really love the way it came out! This is one of my favorite quilts I've made this year. I echoed the flying geese V formation with my quilting, and I think it came out so well!

If you're so inclined, you can vote for my quilt here!

I am so excited that it is Blogger's Quilt Festival time again! I look forward to this every year and love looking at all the wonderful entries! I am very excited this fall that there are new categories for modern quilts and original design.

This is my entry for modern quilting. I love this quilt, I love the quilting and I love the colors. It is one of my favorites!

It doesn't hurt that I also love that I got to take pictures of it in the snow! :)

Greek Plus Puss Quilt

I am so pleased to share this quilt with you today! A few weeks ago, Rossie at Fresh Modern Quilts asked for pattern testers for her new quilt design. I was lucky to be accepted, and I got started right away.

I ended up switching the low volume fabrics into the plus shape instead of using them for the background - I love the different look it gives! I used an assortment of solids from my stash for the puss in the corner blocks. All of the background fabrics are black and grey, and I love the pop of color from those solids! The pattern is well written, and very straightforward. The quilt came together very quickly once I had everything cut out!

I backed the quilt with Kona Raisin, and used the same great silver and white stripe for the binding that I used on my woven quilt. I quilted it using diagonal lines through each section of the block.

Samantha (my oldest) keeps telling me how beautiful this quilt is, and how she wants a quilt like this for her bed. :)

Best part? Rossie gave me a copy of the pattern to give away! All you have to do is leave a comment, and if you feel like it, let me know what quilt you're working on right now - I love new inspiration and ideas! Comments close Thursday at midnight CDT and I'll choose a winner then! Please make sure you leave your email address if you are a no-reply blogger commenter, otherwise I can't reach you! I will also update this post on Friday with the winner, so check back!

**Edited to add** Trish - you are the winner of the pattern! Thanks for the comments everyone!

Sewvivor - knitnlit

Hi and welcome if you are visiting via Sewvivor! I have decided to throw my hat into the ring, and 'audition' for the Sewvivor: quilted edition! :)
I had a very difficult time trying to decide what quilt to enter for this competition, and I finally chose this one I just finished up this week!

I am so very very pleased with the way this one came out - it was many many hours of piecing, cutting and pressing!
The pattern is Simply Woven from the Moda Bake Shop, and I had a good time picking some of my favorite fabrics to use in it.

I did some simple straight line quilting (my favorite!) and I backed it with some of my favorite DS prints, and used this great grey and white striped binding. This one finished at twin size, and I think I will put it away to save for one of my girls when they are a little older. I can't bear to part with it!

Crossing my fingers and toes I'm one of the 16 selected! How fun would that be??

Blogger's Quilt Festival: Large Quilts - Swoon!

Hi! Welcome if you are visiting from Blogger's Quilt Festival! I am so excited to share this recent finish - it is one of my favorites!

I have long wanted to make this pattern, and I purchased a FQ bundle of Denyse Schmidt's Florence line with some birthday money last summer.  Finally, after the holidays were over, I had time to cut into this loveliness!

I used Kona Coal for the background, and I really like it - I think it compliments the colors of the DS fabric very well.

I am so happy to have this on my bed!

Blogger's Quilt Festival: ROYGBIV Quilts - Less is More

Hi! Welcome if you are visiting from Blogger's Quilt Festival! I am so excited to share this quilt with you today - it is one of my new favorites!

I finished this quilt earlier this spring for my quilt guild's solids challenge. The pattern is Less is More by Elizabeth Dackson, available in her book, Becoming a Confident Quilter.

I changed it up a tiny bit, but having the center of each block be one color, instead of a shade of the other colors in the blocks. The light grey is Kona Ash, and the dark grey is Kona Steel. I used a FQ bundle of Kona solids for the blocks - I really love the way it looks!

I finished up the binding on this on our drive to Indiana this March, and it snowed while we were there, so I was able to take my first 'quilt in the snow' pictures! :)

Sketchy Stars Quilt

I am really so pleased with the way this quilt finished up! I was inspired by this quilt, and when I received a bundle of Sketch for Christmas last year, I decided that it would be perfect for this project.

I love wonky stars, and really enjoyed using them again in this quilt. I'm also a sucker for a rainbow, so this was two of my favorite things!

I used a beautiful dark grey Painter's Canvas for the backing and a Kaffe Fasset dot for the binding. I quilted diagonal straight lines in one direction, to give the illusion that the stars were 'shooting.' I am very pleased with how these things really make the quilt complete. I can't wait to snuggle under this one!

Tokyo Subway Map Quilt

I am so so so excited to have this one finished!

I worked on this full steam this fall, and then it sat waiting to be finished until I was done with gifts. I finished binding it on New Year's Eve - one last 2013 finish!

I used Remix rainbow stripe for the back, and Remix chevron for the binding - I wanted to continue the rainbow 'theme' of the front. I quilted 1/4" away from the 'lines' on the outsides of the 'lines.' I think I might like it to have more quilting, but I'm not sure what else I would do besides more straight lines.

My favorite part is probably looking at all of the small scraps left over from previous projects - such fun finding them!

This is my new favorite quilt to snuggle under this winter! I highly recommend this pattern if you like to piece tiny squares! (my favorite!)

2013 Wrap Up

I'm a bit late to this train, but I did want to talk about my favorite things I made in 2013. Of course, our sweet babe is the best thing I made this year. Isn't he adorable?

But my other favorite handmades are these.

I love my Tokyo Subway Map quilt. It was my last finish of the year, and I haven't even blogged about it yet!

I love hubby's Pigeon quilt!

Samantha's gingham shirt made me feel like I really knew how to make clothes now!

I can't believe I actually knit a sweater for myself this year! And one I actually wear quite a bit!

Hunter's Race Car Quilt got me over my fear of curved piecing!

And I love the way this simple patchwork quilt came out.

I can't wait to see what I get done this year!
The kids' backpacks came out so cute!
I really like the way my hat design came out. Maybe this year I will have time to knit one for myself!

Don't let the Pigeon Make a Quilt!

Hubby and I don't exchange gifts these days - we would rather spend our money on the kids, and we receive plenty of gifts from our very generous parents. However, I had this idea that just wouldn't go away!

I used the Patchwork Pattern Maker from the V&A Museum. It was super simple, and very fast. I tried taking the Pictures to Pixel Quilts Class from Craftsy, but it was long, and I felt intimidated by the math involved.

I cut each square at 2.5", to get a throw size quilt (It finished about 48"x60"). I used a variety of aqua prints and solids for his body, and light and dark grey prints for the small details. The background is Painter's Canvas in the white print (I don't recall the exact name!)

I had to lay each row out on the design wall, in secret so the kids wouldn't see! I was slowed by the ice storm that should have given me two kid/husband free mornings to work on it, but I still managed to get it done in time! And he was totally surprised!

Finished BOM Quilt

Last year, our quilt guild decided to do a Block of the Month Quilt. We started with board members choosing blocks for each month. We arranged the blocks to have 12 finish by November, so then we could assemble and quilt our top.

I used a few blocks that I didn't love on the back.

I quilted each block differently - it was fun to do something completely different from my norm. I didn't get a good shot of the quilting though. I had just enough binding left over from the binding of Ellie's big girl quilt to use on this one.

I decided to gift this quilt to Samantha - she hasn't gotten a new quilt in a few years, and Ben and Ellie both have. She loves it, and was so excited to have a new quilt for her bed. Success!

Diamond Oops!

I am so excited to have finished this quilt! I started it way back in the summer - I wanted to make a 'warm' quilt, so I pulled yellows, reds, oranges and hot pinks, and made HSTs with Kona Bone - it is a nice warm neutral.

Untitled

It took a while to work on this with everything else going on this summer, but I finally got it quilted and bound. I LOVE it! There is one tiny mistake in it, but I think it adds to the charm. :)

Untitled

I quilted it in straight lines around the large diamonds - I really like the way it came out. It is backed with a DS print I got on sale at JoAnn's last fall, and bound in Kona Pomenegrante.

Flea Market Fancy Windmills

I am really happy with the way this quilt turned out! I had been wanting to try this arrangement of HSTs, and I wanted to make a quilt out of the Flea Market Fancy reprint - perfect match!

Untitled

I used Kona White for the background. I quilted around the edges of the 'windmills.'

Untitled

I bound it with a JoAnn's DS print I got last fall, and bound it in the tiny pink dots from the FMF reprint. I really don't need another quilt, but I'm not sure I can get rid of this one! :)

Granny Square Quilt Take 2

Granny square quilt 2

Last Christmas I knew I wanted to make a quilt for my mother in law, and I had enjoyed making my first Granny square quilt so much, I decided to make it again. I used all DS prints from JoAnn's, and kept the center square red in each block. I added white sashing and grey cornerstones. I really love this quilt, and she did too!

The white is Kona White, the cornerstones and binding is Kona Ash. I didn't get a picture of the backing and I can't remember what I used! I was glad to finally get a picture of this one, since I didn't get one before it was gifted.
