Gauge has struck again. I had to rip out the Marseilles Pullover this weekend (which I realize I haven't even taken a picture of yet) because it was too big. Not just too big, but huge. But I swatched and got perfect gauge. Argh.
I'm also concerned that Salina is going to be too big. I couldn't get gauge, so I am making a different size than I need to compensate. This worked out OK last spring for the Chrysalis Pullover, and my fingers were crossed that it would work again. The jury's still out on this one.
There's a reason you see so many socks 'round these parts - I rarely have to rip them due to gauge issues.
I'm telling ya, gauge swatches lie. Sleeves, not so much.
ReplyDeleteThat's the worst feeling--with every row you scrutinize and say, this is just so BIG, but you trust your gauge for a few more inches and then you admit it, and it's so disheartening! Socks are the way to go :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with Laura - sleeves. Definitely sleeves.
ReplyDeleteDamned gauge swatches. I haven't done the sleeve as swatch thing before, but heck, even Elizabeth Zimmermann recommended something similar (I think she said to knit a hat).
ReplyDeleteAnd if a sock needs to be ripped, it doesn't hurt as much as ripping a sweater. Ouch!
ReplyDeleteThe evil gauge strikes again. I had to rip out my Ingeborg sleeve several times because my gauge swatch lied. Now my sleeves are my gauge swatch.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. I HATE not hitting guage!
ReplyDeleteFunny, gauge swatches have been lying to me quite a lot lately, too. My solution has been just starting the sweater and then checking gauge once I've got a good long section going. Then ripping out and wondering why do I even try to knit sweaters??
