This is My So Called Scarf. I love the yarn (Brook Farms Four Play) and I mostly like the stitch pattern, but I'm not sure if the two work together. The fabric feels a bit firm (I'm using a US 8 needle), and the edge is rolling. I feel like a scarf should have a bit more give. The general consensus at knitting tonight was to rip and go up a few needle sizes. What do y'all think? Or do you have another pattern suggestion for this yarn?
Hopefully we'll make it home before dark tomorrow so I can get good shots of the Central Park Hoodie. I wore it today and I love it.
I agree - it needs larger needles . . . which should also mix up the varigation better.
ReplyDeleteI agree, before jumping to another stitch pattern, try the larger needles.
ReplyDeleteI think i agree with that. I like the yarn with the pattern but if it is too firm try maybe a size 10 needle.
ReplyDeleteI like the stitch pattern and the yarn color. I think they work well together. But I agree, if it feels stiff, then go up a needle size or two.
ReplyDeleteYup, I have the same opinion as everybody else. I love the yarn with that stitch pattern, but it does look quite stiff for a scarf. Bigger needles might do the trick!!
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem with that pattern. I think I ended up using size 11 needles with a heavy worsted yarn to get a fluid fabric. It will be worth it -- your yarn is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI've made that pattern twice and used sz 11 both times even though the yarns were, at best, only heavy worsted - but...nice fabric and no rolling edge! Try the bigger needles!
ReplyDeleteI love that yarn - hope you do try it with different needles so we can see how the yarn comes out! :)
Larger needles is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI tried to make this scarf twice and every time I ripped because of the rolling hedge and the stiff fabric - good luck!
ReplyDeleteI would try larger needles for a few rows before you restart, just to make sure.
ReplyDeleteI can't give any advice, having never made this pattern before. Sorry! I do, however, love the yarn. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
ReplyDeleteI love the look, but if the fabric is stiff, then I would go up a couple of needle sizes.
ReplyDeleteWhen I had a very similar problem, I ended up sizing up the needles 2 1/2 sizes US. Try a 10.5 or 11.
ReplyDeleteThose plaited stitches both eat yarn (rather like a cable) and are a lot stiffer that you'd imagine (due to the double thickness of yarn in part of the stitch).
Proof positive that even scarves benefit from a gauge swatch. (A lesson I learned the hard way, too.)
